How to Enter/Carve in the Underwater Pumpkin Carving

Let’s talk Underwater Pumpkin Carving today. As you know, the 21st annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving is approaching quickly! Like faster than quickly if that’s even possible. Did you realize we’re into the last 90 days of the year already? How on earth did that happen? But focus… The Underwater Pumpkin Carving… Sunday, October 14, 2018, at 1 pm at Beaver Lake, Indian Creek Campground.

Do I need to give you that information again? I really don’t want you to miss it so let’s break it down…

  • When: October 14, 2018
  • Where: Indian Creek Campground, Beaver Lake, Arkansas
  • Time: 1 pm
  • Entry Fee: $6.

Oooh, it’s a good thing I broke that down, I remembered to add the entry fee. That entry fee is a good thing because… wait for it… There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Hear that? Cash Prizes! Who couldn’t use a couple more dollars this time of year what with having to buy candy and trick-or-treating outfits, or how about Chili Cookoff items? Oh wait, that’s another story… but keep that one in the near middle of your brain. That is coming up soon too!

How to Enter/Carve a Pumpkin at the Underwater Pumpkin Carving

    1. MUST buy a pumpkin.

Don’t steal, swipe, snag, etc… Must buy pumpkin prior to entering underwater pumpkin carving contest. Also note, there’s a limit to the number of pumpkins a diver can have… 1. Just one.

    2. Drive to the dive site.

Okay… remember, the dive site is at Indian Creek Campground at Beaver Lake in Arkansas. Note also that pumpkin can be purchased same day, a day earlier, a week earlier, or even a year earlier prior to pumpkin carving, but again… NO stolen pumpkins.

    3. Sign Waiver/Show proof of SCUBA certification.

Once arrive at the dive site and you park, come to see us. Bring your proof of SCUBA certification and be prepared to sign your life away… haha, just kidding. We just want your first child. Okay, kidding again. Fine, I can be serious… you will have to sign a waiver to participate. We don’t need a DNA sample or your driver’s license number or even your bank account number, but you do need to sign that waiver. It’s easy peasy lemon squeezy!

    4. Get Gear Ready

That’s simple enough, right? You’re a certified diver. Make sure you have your wetsuit (it might be chilly), your regulator, dive computer, a tank of air, BCD, weights, mask, fins, dive boots, oh and that 1 pumpkin. You’ll also in your gear set-up need that dive buddy unless you are solo certified and have the card to prove your solo certified!

    5. Enter the Water.

At 1 pm it is time for you and your dive buddy to enter the water, with your pumpkins! Don’t forget those pumpkins!! Prior to water entry make sure you:

• Must carve out a hole in the top of the pumpkin
• Not start carving the actual pumpkin until you and your pumpkin (plus dive buddy) are fully submerged in the water.
• Don’t forget your dive tools. Carving knives are permitted. You definitely need something to help you carve that cool pumpkin! But PLEASE leave the electric knives at home!!
• Do not mark on your pumpkin in any other way, shape, or form, and of course, you can’t take a carving sheet, or anything traced down with you.
• You have 45 minutes or 500psi to complete your carving
• And by all means, practice safe and courteous diving!
• Remember only 1 pumpkin per diver. Also, no props are allowed.

  1. Judging/Picture.

All who enter the competition are allowed to judge… no one else. Also, that bossy blogger wanted you to know you are required to be in the photograph for the blog/website/Facebook/Instagram.

Finally: General Rules for everyone…

No Alcohol is permitted. Especially if you are diving, if alcohol is suspected, you will be asked to withdraw from the competition. This is a fun, family-friendly event.

Also, if you are a non-diver, please don’t let that detour you from coming!! You can eat, because remember, if there’s food, they will come, and we always have food! Plus, there is a Fish Bowl.

Fish Bowl Drawing: You buy tickets, tickets get thrown in the bowl, names get drawn from the bowl. Yup, that’s how a fish bowl drawing works! The proceeds from this go to help Divers Alert Network… but better yet… YOU get prizes if your ticket is drawn. Win, win for everyone!! Especially those who happen to be good at winning! We have one every time.

So, a recap…

  • Fun, family-friendly event.
  • Carve pumpkins underwater.
  • Raise money for Divers Alert Network.
  • And most of all, eat!
  • Oh, and GO CHIEFS!
