Extreme Diver Interview – Amy Harper

It is always fun to talk Scuba to an unsuspecting group. Last night while I was in my Medieval British Literature Class we were discussing Beowulf. One of the questions was why did he put his full uniform on to fight Grendel’s Mother when he fought Grendel without uniform. I suggested that he put it on to help weigh him down, work with his buoyancy to be able to swim to the bottom of the body of water to Grendel’s Mother’s Lair. The professor said no one had ever offered that suggestion. Score one for the Scuba Diver in the class. So anyway now that I shared our experience with scuba diving in an English Literature class, let’s get to meeting our Extreme Sports Diver this week; meet Amy (La Due) Harper.

How did you get started diving?

Dan La Due told me I was diving. I wasn’t given an option.

How long have you been diving?

10 years.

How many dives do you make in a typical year?

Around 20-25

What other hobbies do you have?

Reading, love watching the kids play football. That’s my fave. And camping. And cooking – feeding the fam. Is that enough?

Where is your favorite place to dive?

Mmmm Cozumel

What is your most comical dive experience?

Ooooo quite a few. Probably holding full conversations underwater with Kim Brungard or finding out Emma La Due really can scream at me underwater.

What is your occupation?

Home Health Nurse/Pediatric ventilation nurse

Words of wisdom/tips or tricks for fellow divers?

Don’t let Emma pack your dive bag or you might wind up with only 1 fin. (Emma: Hey you’re throwing me under the bus)
